Apache Tomcat is an open source web server and servlet container developed by Apache Software Foundation.
Tomcat implements the Java Servlet and the Java Server Pages (JSP) specifications from Sun Microsystems (nowadays Oracle) and provides a simple Java web server development.
Tomcat is not the same as the Apache web server, which is a HTTP web server, although these two servers are frequently used together as part of a server application stack.
Which version of Apache Tomcat should you use? Each version implements different versions of Servlet and JSP specifications. Tomcat 7 implements 3.0 Servlet specification, which is Java EE 6. Tomcat 6 implements Java EE 5 specification and so on.
Installation is quick and easy. Just download ZIP file and unzip it somewhere. Then goto bin and run startup.bat. You should see this console window and information that server startup successfully.
Next open web browser and goto http://localhost:8080. If you see this page, then it means, that your Tomcat installation works successfully.
